Royal Gorge Route Locomotive 8

In 1879, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway completed a line from Pueblo, Colorado to Cañon City. The Royal Gorge Route was an engineering marvel in its day and was considered one of the most difficult lines to construct due to the precariousness of the terrain. It was not uncommon for trains to derail while crossing the gorge.

On June 6, 1929, the Royal Gorge Bridge was completed and the railway line became even more popular as it provided breathtaking views of the gorge below. The locomotive known as Canon City was built in 1883 by Baldwin Locomotive Works and is one of only two surviving steam locomotives that operated on the Royal Gorge Route.

The Canon City is currently on display at the Royal Gorge Railroad Museum in Cañon City and is a popular tourist attraction.
