The Royal Gorge Route Railroad Canon City is a historic train line that runs through the majestic Royal Gorge canyon. The railroad offers spectacular views of the canyon and the Arkansas River below. The train also makes stops at some of the most popular tourist attractions in the area, including the Canon City Visitor Center, the Royal Gorge Bridge, and the Parkdale Mill.

In 1879, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway completed a line from Pueblo, Colorado to Cañon City. The Royal Gorge Route was an engineering marvel in its day and was considered one of the most difficult lines to construct due to the precariousness of the terrain. It was not uncommon for trains to derail while crossing the gorge.

On June 6, 1929, the Royal Gorge Bridge was completed and the railway line became even more popular as it provided breathtaking views of the gorge below. The locomotive known as Canon City was built in 1883 by Baldwin Locomotive Works and is one of only two surviving steam locomotives that operated on the Royal Gorge Route.

Garden Park Fossil Area Canon City is a world-renowned fossil site that has produced some of the most important discoveries in paleontology. The Garden Park Fossil Area was first discovered in 1877 by two amateur paleontologists, Oramel Lucas and Levi Noble. They uncovered the remains of a number of dinosaurs, including Stegosaurus and Allosaurus. These discoveries attracted the attention of famous paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope, who led an expedition to the area in 1878. Cope's expedition resulted in the discovery of even more dinosaur fossils, as well as the first evidence of crocodiles in North America.
